Why Simulation Testing?

Products are often exposed to complex and changing conditions throughout their service life. Simulation testing allows these conditions to be reproduced in a controlled laboratory environment, making it possible to identify potential weaknesses and evaluate performance before the product is used in the field.

What Can Be Simulated?

Mechanical Loads

Products can be subjected to different types of mechanical forces that represent the loads experienced during normal operation.

  • Tension – Simulates pulling forces acting on a component.
  • Compression – Reproduces forces that push or compress a component.
  • Bending – Evaluates how a product responds when subjected to bending forces.
  • Torsion – Simulates twisting or rotational forces.
  • Combined Loads – Reproduces situations where multiple forces act on a component simultaneously.

 

Repeated Loading

Many products are not subjected to a single load. Instead, they experience thousands or millions of repeated loading cycles throughout their service life.

Simulation testing can reproduce these repeated loads to evaluate how a product behaves over time.

For example, a component may repeatedly experience:

Load → Release → Load → Release → Load

This allows manufacturers to determine whether the component gradually develops deformation, cracks, wear, or other forms of failure.

Realistic Load Profiles

Actual operating conditions are rarely constant. The force applied to a product can increase, decrease, change direction, or occur at different speeds.

Simulation Testing can reproduce a defined load profile that represents the sequence of forces experienced during actual operation.

For example:  Low load → High load → Hold → Release → Reverse load → Repeat

Instead of testing a product with one constant force, the test can reproduce a more realistic sequence of events.

Movement & Displacement

Simulation testing can also reproduce specific movements or changes in position that occur during normal product operation.

This can include:

  • Controlled displacement
  • Repeated movement
  • Extension and retraction
  • Rotational movement
  • Defined movement sequences

The movement can be controlled according to parameters such as distance, speed, frequency, and number of cycles.

Speed & Strain Rate

The same force can produce very different results depending on how quickly it is applied.

Simulation Testing can therefore reproduce different loading speeds or strain rates to represent different operating scenarios.

For example:

  • Slow, controlled loading
  • Normal operating speed
  • Rapid loading
  • High-speed loading
Service-Life Conditions

Simulation testing can combine different loading conditions into a test sequence designed to represent the expected service life of a product.

Rather than simply asking “How much force can this product withstand?”, the test can investigate:

“How will this product perform after being used repeatedly under realistic conditions?”

A test sequence could involve different forces, movements and cycles to reproduce an expected usage pattern.
